Humanitarian Engineering refers to bringing improvement in the lives of disadvantaged communities through Engineering strategies and techniques
Engineers can help immensely in improving conditions coexisting with chronic problems which are often further aggravated in the aftermath of natural and man-made disasters. Broadly speaking this help is via improving the technological capacity of the people in disadvantaged communities. A better technological skillset enables local communities to reduce difficulties involved in ensuring access to clean water, sanitation, power generation etc. In sum Humanitarian engineering involves finding creative solutions to problems of serious consequence to a community. Examples of humanitarian engineering projects could include building and installing solar panels in a remote village in Malaysia, building wells in rural villages in Kenya,designing food security strategies, technologies to ensure/ enhance women empowerment, designing an affordable water filtration device etc.
